Kandis Williams' 'A Monument A Ruin' on CIRCA Screens in 7 Cities
CIRCA, the public art platform founded by Josef O'Connor, has expanded its digital billboard project to seven cities worldwide. Every evening at 20:22, a video by Cassandra Press (founded by Kandis Williams) titled 'A Monument A Ruin' plays on screens in London (Piccadilly Circus), Melbourne (Fed Square), Seoul (Coex k-pop Square), and Tokyo (Yunika Vision), among others. The work juxtaposes ancient Pompeian wall inscriptions with contemporary protest graffiti from the Black Lives Matter movement, questioning colonialist meanings in public art. The project originated from Pompeii Commitment, a research initiative led by Massimo Osanna, Andrea Viliani, Stella Bottai, Laura Mariano, and Gabriel Zuchtriegel, which commissions contemporary art for the Pompeii Archaeological Park. Williams' video runs through February 28, 2022. CIRCA also sells limited-edition works to support its free public art program, with two £15,000 scholarships announced in collaboration with Goldsmiths University of London.
