Kandinsky and Cage in Dialogue at Palazzo Magnani

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Palazzo Magnani in Reggio Emilia, celebrating 20 years of exhibition activity in 2017, presents 'Kandinsky-Cage: Music and Spirituality in Art' starting November. The show traces a novel path between art and music, from Wassily Kandinsky's turn to spiritual abstraction around 1910 to John Cage's illuminated silence. It features about 50 works by Kandinsky with musical themes, including watercolors for theatrical performances from the Centre Pompidou. The exhibition explores concepts of interiority and spirituality, drawing on influences from musicians Richard Wagner, Constantin Ciurlionis (represented by works and scores from his eponymous museum in Kaunas, Lithuania), and Arnold Schoenberg (later Cage's teacher), as well as visual artists Paul Klee and Marianne von Werefkin, the latter linked to Kandinsky and Der Blaue Reiter.
