Kameelah Janan Rasheed's 'An Opening' at Brooklyn Historical Society explores Muslim oral histories through collage.

exhibition · 2026-04-20

At the Brooklyn Historical Society, Kameelah Janan Rasheed presents 'An Opening,' an engaging classroom experience featuring black-and-white collages and interactive sound elements. This installation utilizes the 'Muslims in Brooklyn' oral history archive, which comprises over 90 narratives gathered between 2018 and 2019. The exhibition showcases framed inkjet prints alongside collages that incorporate abstract phrases such as 'transatlantic almost misplaced the words.' Attendees can activate audio clips using iPhones and headphones, resulting in a blend of voices. As a black Muslim woman, Rasheed explores themes of institutional history and marginalized stories. The installation, which references the Qur'an's initial chapter, includes pieces like 'More Pronounced' (2019) and will be displayed until 30 June 2020.
