Kamal Releases Debut Album with Dave Feature, Reflects on Music Industry

London-based singer-songwriter Kamal has released his debut album after years in the industry. The 24-year-old, signed to Neighbourhood Recordings as a teenager, gained attention with his 2020 single 'Homebody' and the R&B-tinged 'Blue', which reportedly caught the ear of Billie Eilish. His new 13-track album includes the track 'The People That Saved Me', featuring Brit Award-winning rapper Dave, who also appears on the album. Kamal described asking Dave to feature as 'scary' but noted their existing connection from Kamal's feature on Dave's 2021 track 'Mercury'. He has also collaborated with Central Cee on 'Now We're Strangers' and performed with him at The O2 in London. Kamal aims for honesty in his music, addressing themes of love, heartbreak, depression, and friendship in songs like 'Suffer' and 'All My Favourite People Are Sad'. He critiques the oversaturation of content on platforms like TikTok, comparing it to 'fast food' music, and emphasizes his focus on creating meaningful work for his core fans. Kamal, of Trinidad, Belize, English, and Palestinian descent, remains grateful and takes his career day-by-day.
