Kaja Clara Joo's '다시 : DASI' Examines Material Transformation at Korean Culture Center Vienna

exhibition · 2026-05-24

Kaja Clara Joo's solo show, '다시 : DASI,' will be held at the Korean Culture Center Vienna from May 22 to June 5, 2026. This exhibition explores the nuances between leaving and arriving, pondering whether returning equates to healing or change. It encompasses various spaces, including a rooftop pavilion. The artist employs materials such as charcoal-mixed latex, copper, brass, epoxied lotus leaves, and cyanotype prints on brass. A steel structure showcases video monitors displaying deep-sea survey footage marked 'Dive Number: 37.' The second room features frames in a traditional Korean changssal design alongside cyanotype prints of rice harvests. Three oval pieces allude to traditional Korean brass and gold artifacts lost during colonization and the 1990s financial crisis. The video 'All These Dwellings Are Temporary' juxtaposes a plaque from Corsicana, Texas, with protest footage, while copper plates display engraved text fragments. In the rooftop pavilion, large metal sheets are situated in rice pools. This exhibition is informed by residencies at the Lee Ungno Museum (2024), the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (2025), and 100 West Space (2026).
