institutional · 2026-05-04

The Kai Art Center, a new contemporary art hub, will open on September 20, 2019, in Tallinn's Noblessner district, housed in a former submarine factory over 100 years old. The center is promoted by the Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC) and aims to foster local contemporary art through exhibitions and events. Designed by KAOS Architects, it features 450 square meters of exhibition space on the top floor, an auditorium, an educational center, residency accommodations, and workspaces for local art organizations. The ground floor includes a restaurant and culinary studios. The center will host four exhibitions annually with Estonian and international curators. Its opening exhibition, "Let the field of your attention…. soften and spread out," curated by Hanna Laura Kaljo, is part of the Tallinn Photomonth biennial (September 6–November 3, 2019). The Kai Residency program, open to international visual artists, curators, writers, and art professionals, offers two- to four-week stays starting in October 2019 with 14 participants, curated by Kari Conte, director of exhibitions at ISCP New York.
