Kahlil Joseph is the recipient of the 2020 Eye Art & Film Prize, which comes with a £25,000 grant to develop new projects. Based in Los Angeles, he focuses on immersive video art that blends cinema, pop music, and visual elements. His notable piece, BLKNWS (2019), is a two-channel video that explores black culture using both archival and contemporary clips and debuted at the Venice Biennale. Joseph has also worked on music videos for big names like Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, FKA twigs, and Flying Lotus. The Eye Filmmuseum, alongside the Paddy & Joan Leigh Fermor Arts Fund, launched this prize in 2015 to aid artists merging visual art and film. Past winners include Hito Steyerl and Ben Rivers. Joseph was selected by a jury headed by Sandra den Hamer, with members like filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul and artist Aernout Mik.
