Kader Attia's 'Shattering and Gathering our Traces' at Lehmann Maupin

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Lehmann Maupin in New York is showcasing 'Shattering and Gathering our Traces,' marking Kader Attia's first solo exhibition in the city in over five years, alongside the US premiere of various new works. This exhibition includes sculpture, installation, collage, and film, highlighting Attia's ongoing exploration of themes such as repair, identity, and postcolonial critique. A key feature is the interactive installation 'Resonance' (2025), which consists of bird cages with bells that invite audience participation to create sound. Attia addresses issues of digital isolation and algorithmic governance versus communal gathering. The film 'La Valise oubliée [The Forgotten Suitcase]' (2024), also featured at the 36th São Paulo Biennial, examines Algerian War artifacts connected to Jean-Jacques Lebel, Françoise Vergès, and his mother. Additionally, three sculptural suitcases containing shattered glass symbolize broken memories. Recently, Attia completed a residency at the Louvre Museum in Paris and has upcoming solo shows at MUAC in Mexico City, Amparo Museum in Puebla, and CAAC Sevilla in Spain.
