Kader Attia Curates 12th Berlin Biennale with Decolonial Repair Theme
Artist Kader Attia will curate the 12th Berlin Biennale, scheduled from 11 June to 18 September 2022 across multiple city venues. This edition focuses on decolonization through the concept of 'repair,' addressing physical objects, injuries, and societal traumas. Attia emphasizes that decolonial thinking represents an ongoing conversation rather than a concluded process. The biennial will explore art's role as critical care against colonial legacies and climate crises. Key questions include restitution of plundered goods, non-Western feminist movements, and connections between colonialism and environmental destruction. Attia founded La Colonie in Paris in 2016, a multidisciplinary space dedicated to decolonial debates that closed in July 2020. He has launched an appeal for funding a new venue. Born in France and Algeria, Attia studied in Paris and Barcelona, now working between Berlin and Paris.
