K-Studio and Arup to expand Grigoris Lamprakis Stadium in Athens
K-Studio and Arup have unveiled plans for the renovation and expansion of the Grigoris Lamprakis Stadium in Athens, commonly known as El Paso. The 6,300-seat stadium, home to Athens Kallithea FC, will be expanded to 9,000 seats with upgraded facilities and a front extension. The design aims to activate the site beyond match days by introducing a new public park, restaurants, and event spaces, transforming it into a multi-use venue. The existing structure will be largely preserved, with surrounding seating stands expanded and partially shaded by canopies. A new facade extension, inspired by local scaffolding, will be added. The gridded steel extension will house public spaces at ground level and external walkways under curved roof panels. The project seeks to create a "porous civic landscape" by opening up the fenced perimeter for a public park with trees to improve microclimate. Other additions include retail space, and updates to the wellness zone, exhibition area, and multi-purpose event space. K-Studio founder Dimitris Karampatakis described the transformation as re-envisioning the stadium as a contemporary venue for sports and culture. Creative director Giorgos Karampelas added that the proposal reframes the site as an active civic hub. Renders are courtesy of Filippo Bolognese.
