Juventus unveils Heysel memorial by Luca Vitone near Allianz Stadium

artist · 2026-04-26

Juventus has commissioned a memorial sculpture titled 'Verso Altrove' to mark the 40th anniversary of the Heysel Stadium disaster, in which 39 fans died on May 29, 1985. The work, designed by artist Luca Vitone with late critic Luca Beatrice, is a 65-meter spiral ramp rising three meters from a 2,000-square-meter green area near the Allianz Stadium, Training Center, and club headquarters in the J-Village complex. The ramp, accessible to people with disabilities, leads to a reversed-lens telescope that symbolically pushes the gaze beyond the horizon. The project includes lavender bushes and Ginkgo biloba trees, a species that survived the atomic bomb in Japan, evoking resilience. A series of lights along the ramp will be visible at night and from aircraft approaching Caselle Airport. Vitone, who won a competition among ten finalists, worked on the project for about two years; construction began in December 2024. The memorial is located on Strada della Continassa, near the stadium.
