Juti Ravenna retrospective at Treviso's Musei Civici spans six thematic sections
The Musei Civici di Treviso have opened a monographic exhibition dedicated to Juti Ravenna (Annone Veneto, 1897 – Treviso, 1972), curated by Eleonora Drago and Eugenio Manzato. Over one hundred works trace the artist's career from his early training in Annone Veneto (1911–1919) to his move to Venice, where he engaged with Ca' Pesaro artists like Pio Semeghini and Gino Rossi, and his eventual settlement in Treviso in 1949. The show is organized into six chronological and thematic sections. The first, 'Annone e la formazione (1911–1919),' highlights his early stylistic experimentation. Ravenna's participation in the Venice Biennale began in 1928, and the exhibition includes Venetian views, Burano landscapes, seascapes, and interior scenes characterized by compact drawing and bold color. A fourth section, 'Incursioni nel sacro,' presents full-scale reproductions of frescoes he painted in 1927 for the Chapel of San Giovanni Battista in the Duomo di San Donà di Piave. Portraiture is represented by the 1938 'Autoritratto in costume da Pierrot,' which reflects Cézanne's influence in building form through color. The final section focuses on still lifes—eggs, flower vases, bottles—that echo De Pisis. Critic Giovanni Comisso wrote in 1949 that Ravenna's personality resisted categorization, engaging with metaphysical painting, naturalism, Cézanne, Valori Plastici, and De Pisis while maintaining an original interpretation.
