JustMad 2018 Moves to a 19th-Century Palace with New Curatorial Team

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

JustMad, the Madrid art fair founded nine years ago as a collateral event to ARCO, is relocating to Casa Palacio Carlos Maria de Castro, a 19th-century mansion in the upscale Almagro district. The fair will no longer be held at the COAM building (Colegio de Arquitectos de Madrid). New artistic directors are Semíramis González, a 29-year-old theorist from Asturias who trained at the Museo Reina Sofía, and Daniel Silvo, a 35-year-old video artist from Cádiz. They replace previous leadership. The fair runs from February 20 to 25, 2018, at Calle Fernando el Santo 14. A selection committee of collectors (Pilar Citoler, Oliva Arauna, Norberto Dotor, Basola Vallés, Guillermo Rozenblum) and gallerists (Herrero de Tejada, Loo & Lou, SCAN) chose the 35 galleries for the General Program. The only Italian gallery, White Noise from Rome, returns for a second consecutive year. The fair includes sections Brand New, Solo Project, and Context (curated by Inez Piso and Octavo Avendaño), a photography residency prize from Fundación Enaire, and an artist residency in Genalguacil, Málaga, where four young artists (two Spanish, two Portuguese) created works under Basque artist Asier Mendizábal. Founder Enrique Polanco notes that some historic galleries have returned to JustMad after moving to ARCO. The curators emphasize the fair's role as a discovery platform, with galleries presenting works by up to three artists each, and prices kept accessible to encourage new collectors.
