Justine Bougerol's 'Quelques lueurs' at Maac Bruxelles

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Justine Bougerol's exhibition 'Quelques lueurs' at Maac in Brussels runs until November 5, 2022. The show is the result of a three-year residency and in situ reflection. Bougerol, also a scenographer, creates thresholds that blend tangible and evanescent elements, inspired by Bachelard, Tarkovsky, and Bonnefoy. The exhibition features a real hole dug into the basement containing an extinct volcanic landscape with a persistent glow. Four additional thresholds are depicted in black, high-contrast decors. Two photographs complement the fire/water dialectic: a burned house (a former theater set) and a cave image evoking memory. A continuous liquid sound leads to 'Le Corps des larmes,' a seven-drawer cabinet overflowing with water. The final piece is an archipelago of black mountains surrounded by dark water, with a tunnel revealing a solar cycle reflection. The exhibition is organic and intimate, exploring themes of purification, memory, and saudade.
