Justine Alexandria Tek Appointed Director of Yuz Museum Following Founder's Death
Justine Alexandria Tek has been named director of the Yuz Museum, succeeding her late father Budi Tek, who passed away six months ago. She joined the Yuz Foundation in 2015, rising to foundation director in 2017 and museum CEO in 2018, and will now oversee programming and exhibition coordination at the Shanghai institution. Tek announced that the museum is entering a second development phase, focusing on the Hongqiao Business District and planning a grand opening exhibition at the new Panlong Tiandi venue next spring, which will feature works from the Yuz Foundation's collection. She introduced the 'Yuz Flow' philosophy, emphasizing a human-centered approach with flexible layouts and broader collaborations to allow audiences to engage with art beyond traditional white-cube spaces. Budi Tek, born in Jakarta to Chinese parents, founded the Yuz Museum there in 2006 and expanded to Shanghai in 2014, housing his 1,500-piece collection in a repurposed aircraft hangar designed by Sou Fujimoto. The museum has hosted solo exhibitions for artists like Zhou Li, Random International, and Sun Xun, as well as shows by Western artists including Donna Huanca, Alicja Kwade, and KAWS. Tek aims to build on her father's 'collecting to share' ethos, fostering aesthetic understanding through varied forms and breaking constraints of time and space.
