Jurgen Schadeberg retrospective at Centro Pérez Siquier, Almería
The Fundación Ibáñez Cosentino presents 'El largo camino', a retrospective of German-born South African photographer Jurgen Schadeberg (1931–2020), at the Centro Pérez Siquier in Olula del Río, Almería, until September 13, 2026. Curated by Claudia Schadeberg, Vilma Dobilaité, and Nicolás Llorens, the exhibition spans seven decades of his career, featuring images of everyday life under apartheid, portraits of Nelson Mandela (including his 1994 visit to Robben Island), and documentation of key historical events such as the 1952 Defiance Campaign, the 1958 Treason Trial, the Sophiatown removals, and the 1960 Sharpeville funeral. Also on view are photographs of cultural figures like Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Dolly Rathebe, and Kippie Moeketsi. Schadeberg, who fled Nazi Germany in 1950 for Cape Town, worked as picture editor and art director for Drum magazine, using his Leica to document black cultural life in Soweto. After the murder of colleague Henry Nxumalo, he left South Africa with his negatives, eventually settling in La Drova, Spain, where he photographed disappearing customs such as bullfights and the Fiesta Mayor de los Verdiales. With his wife Claudia, he founded The Schadeberg Movie Company, producing fifteen documentaries including Voices from Robben Island 1994 for the BBC. His autobiography is titled The Way I See It.
