Jürg Kreienbühl's Suburban Landscapes at Loeve&Co
Galerie Loeve&Co in Paris presents 'Jürg Kreienbühl, les années bidonvilles,' an exhibition of the Swiss painter (1932-2007) through February 27, 2021. The show focuses on his depictions of Parisian suburbs in transition, including the small work 'Sans titre (Les constructions nouvelles)' (1967), which juxtaposes a Marseille calanque-like foreground with construction cranes near Gennevilliers. Kreienbühl moved from Basel to Cormeilles-en-Parisis, cycling through shantytowns and industrial zones. He painted towers by Émile Aillaud, La Défense construction sites, and garbage heaps. His son Stéphane Belzère, also an artist, recalls their caravan travels. Kreienbühl used vinyl paint early, experimented with monotypes, and created the 'Petrol-nymphéas' series. The exhibition also includes domestic interiors of shantytown residents, still lifes with carrots and onions, and a wall of erotic magazine clippings. His work was long seen as mere documentation of the Zone; few critics engaged, but writers Daniel Pennac, Didier Daeninckx, and cartoonist Jacques Tardy supported him. Galerie Alain Blondel showed his work at FIAC. Kreienbühl also painted at the Muséum d'histoire naturelle.
