Juliette Dumas's whale paintings inspire Ami Yamasaki's vocal performance at Silas von Morisse Gallery

During the final hour of Juliette Dumas's exhibition at Silas von Morisse Gallery, sound artist Ami Yamasaki performed a vocal response to the whale imagery in Dumas's paintings. Yamasaki, based in Tokyo, visited the gallery weeks earlier after perceiving the whales in Dumas's canvases as singing to her and requesting a reply. With gallery permission, she created music using unconventional vocal techniques, producing sounds reminiscent of birdsong, ocean resonances, and extraterrestrial tones. The performance concluded Dumas's show, which featured works like "Whale Fluke (Le Grand Bleu)" from 2018—a two-panel piece measuring 60 x 144 inches, made with clay and gouache on paper mounted on canvas. The exhibition was held at 109 Ingraham Street in Bushwick, between Knickerbocker and Porter avenues. Simultaneously, a project room exhibition by Stephen Maine also ended on the same day. Dumas's work is represented by Silas von Morisse Gallery, which hosted the event.
