Julian Opie's floating LED marathon debuts at GINZA SIX Tokyo

exhibition · 2026-05-22

British artist Julian Opie has unveiled 'Marathon. Women.', his first floating LED installation, at the central atrium of GINZA SIX in Tokyo. The large-scale work, which debuted on September 11, 2025, depicts seven female sprinters in Opie's signature minimalist style, moving at varying speeds across suspended LED signage visible from four floors. The atrium was designed by Gwenael Nicolas of Curiosity. From April 10 to June 30, 2026, two additional works—'20 Children' on the rooftop garden and 'Playground' at the 1F entrance using mesh LED technology—will be on view, inspired by Opie's first visit to the site in autumn 2025. The installations are part of GINZA SIX's theme 'From the Ginza to the World', positioning the retail hub as a cultural platform.
