Julia Margaret Cameron Honored with Blue Plaque in London
A blue plaque has been inaugurated by English Heritage at 10 Chesham Place in Belgravia, London, to commemorate photographer Julia Margaret Cameron. After returning from Ceylon, where her fourth son was born, she resided there for a short period. Cameron embarked on her photography journey at the age of 48 in December 1863, using a camera gifted by her daughter, and within a month, she captured her first notable image, a portrait of Annie Philpot. She is known for her renowned portraits of Tennyson, Darwin, and Carlyle, and aimed to make a career in photography. Cameron registered copyrights, held a solo exhibition at the British Museum, and received awards from photographic societies. She relocated to Ceylon in 1875 and passed away in 1879. Among the descendants present at the plaque unveiling were Jules Cameron, Jasmine van den Bogaerde, and Julian Bell.
