Julia Kristeva's alleged spy role questioned by Bulgarian commission report
Bulgaria's Dossier Commission recently claimed that philosopher Julia Kristeva collaborated with the country's communist-era secret services during the 1970s. However, the full report released last Friday presents a more nuanced picture, suggesting Kristeva was an unwilling participant if she cooperated at all. According to a 1984 intelligence report translated by France 24, Kristeva provided information about Bulgarian nationals abroad, progressive Arab organizations including Palestinian groups, and Maoist activities beginning in late 1970. The report notes her information was not particularly valuable and she demonstrated poor discipline, frequently missing meetings while claiming to be busy. Kristeva received no payment and authored no reports on her peers. By 1973, when she embraced Maoism, she was completely cut off from any collaboration apparatus. The author of over 30 books who worked alongside French intellectuals Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan, and Roland Barthes, Kristeva's potential involvement with Bulgaria's authoritarian regime initially caused widespread distress in her home country. This anguish has diminished following the publication of the complete documents, which partially exonerate the psychoanalyst and philosopher.
