Jule Korneffel's 'In Search of Lost Light' Exhibition Explores Fading Light Through Gray Paintings

The Spencer Brownstone Gallery is hosting Jule Korneffel's exhibition 'In Search of Lost Light,' which will be open until May 2. This showcase features seven paintings created between 2023 and 2026. After spending the winter in northeastern Germany and immersing herself in Marcel Proust's writings, Korneffel transitioned from blue to gray tones. Her artistic approach highlights distinct color schemes, paint thickness, and mark-making, delving into themes of austerity and richness. The displayed works range in size from 20 x 18 inches to 80 x 96 inches and include an outdoor mural titled 'New York City Rising.' References to Roman mythology and Italian Renaissance frescoes are evident in pieces like 'Aurora and her Siblings (Morgenröte)' (2024) and 'Withered Summer (Proust) / Giotto's San Francis before restoration' (2023). Korneffel previously exhibited at Hunter College (2018) and Spencer Brownstone Gallery (2019, 2022).
