JUJURWORK Transforms Kuantan Rooftop into Vibrant Korean BBQ Restaurant
JUJURWORK, a Malaysian architectural firm headed by Evelyn Jingjie Wong, has finalized the Jibungae KBBQ, a 450-square-metre Korean barbecue venue situated on the rooftop of a 1970s structure in Kuantan, Malaysia. This initiative revitalizes an underused rooftop space, offering panoramic views of the Kuantan River along with notable sights such as the State Mosque and Kuantan bridge. The design harmoniously integrates the Korean Wave with tropical urban elements, incorporating three distinct spatial types: Pojangmacha seating, a butterfly canopy inspired by Hanok architecture, and a vibrant mural featuring faux LED signage. The architects also redesigned skylights for enhanced safety and practicality, strategically placing heavier components on load-bearing walls. This project showcases the potential for rooftop reclamation in low-rise coastal cities.
