Juergen Teller's '7½' at Sabbioneta's Palazzo Giardino

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Juergen Teller's exhibition '7½' opens at the Galleria degli Antichi and Sala degli Specchi of Palazzo Giardino in Sabbioneta, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Mantua province. Curated by Mario Codognato, who previously worked with Teller in Naples, the show features an unconventional installation: in the Sala degli Specchi, photographs hang from the ceiling, while in the Galleria degli Antichi they lie horizontally on a long wooden table, forcing visitors to physically lean in. The title references the seven and a half years Teller has collaborated with his wife Dovile Drizyte, and the daily time they spend together. Works include 'Why Trump' (a book protruding from a jeans pocket, without a question mark), 'We are building our future together No.98' (2021, shot in Naples, showing the couple dressed as workers digging a sidewalk), and images of sheep among cemetery crosses, a child at a formal dinner table, and a bitten apple on a woman's nose in an old painting. Codognato notes that Teller's inclusion of the everyday and instant freezing of situations anticipated social media aesthetics and influenced recent generations in photography. Teller, a 60-year-old German artist based in London for nearly 40 years, is known for fashion campaigns and boundary-pushing work that blends irony and critique. The exhibition presents an intimate album of private memories, reflecting time, change, and love for his wife.
