Judy Natal's Future Perfect explores climate futures through photography at three global sites

artist · 2026-04-22

Judy Natal's photographic project Future Perfect examines climate and ecological crises by visualizing three distinct landscapes. The work travels from a future perspective back to the present, capturing a Las Vegas desert preserve, Biosphere 2 in Oracle, Arizona, and Iceland's geothermal terrains. These sites represent human interventions in land use and explorations of futurity. Natal's images create resonances between disparate environments to distill hopes and misunderstandings about nature. Her project serves as both cautionary tale and utopian dream, using steam and ambiguity to provoke reflection on fragile landscapes. Natal is a Santa Fe-based artist and Professor Emeritus at Columbia College Chicago. An archive of her environmental work was established at the Nevada Museum of Art's Center for Art + Environment in 2012. Her photographs and videos have been shown at the São Paulo Biennial and FotoFest Biennial in Houston. Natal's work is in permanent collections including the California Museum of Photography and Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. She has received commissions from Houston FotoFest and Burlington City Arts, along with fellowships like a Fulbright Travel Grant. The project was featured during Earth Week on Lenscratch, curated to highlight artists making climate issues visible through lens-based art.
