Judgement Scene from Book of the Dead of Hunefer: A Masterpiece of Ancient Egyptian Art

The Judgement Scene from the Book of the Dead of Hunefer, dating to ca. 1290–1280 BCE (19th Dynasty, New Kingdom), is a detailed papyrus painting depicting the Weighing of the Heart Ceremony. Hunefer, a royal scribe and steward to Pharaoh Seti I, commissioned this personalized funerary text to ensure his passage into the afterlife. The scene shows Hunefer being led by the jackal-headed god Anubis to a balance scale where his heart is weighed against the Feather of Ma'at. The hybrid demon Ammit awaits to devour sinful hearts, while the ibis-headed god Thoth records the outcome. Hunefer passes the test, and the falcon-headed god Horus escorts him to the enthroned green-skinned Osiris, god of the dead, flanked by goddesses Isis and Nephthys. The upper register features 14 gods including Ra, Atum, Shu, Tefnut, Geb, Nut, Horus, Isis, Nephthys, Hu, Sia, and personifications of roads. The painting measures 45 cm x 90.5 cm and exhibits a conservative style rejecting the earlier Amarna period's curvilinear forms. Acquired by the British Museum in 1852, it has been on public display for over 160 years, fulfilling Hunefer's desire for immortality through the speaking of his name.
