Juan Navarro Baldeweg monograph explores intersections of art, architecture, and philosophy

Antonello Marotta's new book 'Juan Navarro Baldeweg. Intersezioni e confluenze' (LetteraVentidue edizioni, Siracusa 2024, 320 pp., €39) examines the Spanish architect's work through art, literature, and philosophy. The volume includes a text by Baldeweg himself titled 'Frenhofer e Lord Chados'. Marotta, an architect and architecture theorist, moves beyond traditional monograph boundaries to reveal Baldeweg's compositional method. Key projects analyzed: Casa della pioggia (Lièrgane, 1979-1982), a conceptual work integrating rain noise into the zinc roof; Mulini vecchi di Murcia renovation (1984-1987) highlighting light's power to shape matter; Palazzo dei congressi e delle esposizioni di Castilla-León (Salamanca, 1985-1992) with a floating dome; and Biblioteca Hertziana (Rome, 1995-2012) reinterpreting ancient topography. Baldeweg's training at the Scuola di Belle Arti di San Fernando (engraving) and studies in the USA inform his dual practice as artist and architect. The book connects his work to avant-garde art and archaic tradition, emphasizing his concept of void and light.
