Juan Asensio's 'Apenas transitar' Opens at Galería Elvira González During Madrid Gallery Weekend

On September 10, Galería Elvira González in Madrid will inaugurate 'Apenas transitar', the eleventh solo exhibition by Spanish sculptor Juan Asensio (born in Cuenca, 1959) at the gallery, timed to coincide with APERTURA Madrid Gallery Weekend 2026. The show features around twenty recent sculptures that continue the artist's decades-long investigation into the relationship between geometry and nature. Asensio, an autodidact, was influenced by key figures of Spanish sculpture such as Jorge Oteiza, Martín Chirino, Manolo Valdés, and Juan Bordes. His career began with his first exhibition at Galería Elvira González in 1996, and he has received awards including El Ojo Crítico from Radio Nacional de España and the XX Certamen de Artes Plásticas de Caja Madrid. The exhibition presents the most diverse body of work Asensio has created to date, combining compact, geometric sculptures that convey stillness with pieces inspired by the curvature patterns of thistles, which are stripped of descriptive elements to focus on surface tensions and rhythms. The selection also includes three alabaster sculptures that explore the material's optical qualities, transparency, and light diffusion. The title 'Apenas transitar' reflects the artist's awareness of the limits of understanding nature, suggesting a brief human transit against the vastness of physical systems. Asensio's works are held in important public and private collections, and he has completed numerous public sculpture projects.
