JR sells exclusive Women are Heroes edition to fund Casa Amarela

market-auction · 2026-04-27

In the Amazon, French artist JR is collaborating with international volunteers on a collective art initiative, capturing images of children within indigenous communities, reminiscent of his earlier work in Turin. His past endeavor, Women are Heroes (2008-2014), focused on photographing women in marginalized regions of Brazil, Kenya, India, Cambodia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Sudan, showcasing their vital community roles. This project culminated in 2,600 paper strips affixed to a container ship in Le Havre, France, which then journeyed to Malaysia. In 2009, alongside Maurício Hora, JR established the Casa Amarela Cultural Center in Rio de Janeiro to provide workshops for locals. To support the center’s growth, Carbono Galleria is offering a limited light box edition of Women are Heroes for sale.
