artist · 2026-05-04

French street artist JR (born 1983) stated in an interview with Great Big Story that art does not have the task of changing the world but can change the way we see it. The video features JR and his collaborators discussing the origins and development of his most famous work, Inside Out. Launched in 2011, the project is a global, participatory extension of JR's signature practice: printing large-format photographs and pasting them on public surfaces like buildings, houses, ships, and trains. Anyone can participate via the website or one of the photo booth trucks traveling worldwide, sharing their stories by literally putting their faces into the project. To date, over 260,000 people from 129 countries have taken part in Inside Out.
