JR brings Inside Out to Milan nursing homes and Duomo

French street artist JR returns to Italy with his participatory art project Inside Out, installing large-scale portraits of elderly nursing home residents on Milan's Arengario buildings (Museo del Novecento) and the RSA "Coniugi e Ferrari" in the Corvetto district from January 31 to February 14, 2023. The project, which began in 2011 after JR won the TED Prize, has involved nearly half a million people across 148 countries. For this Milan edition, over 1,000 portraits of elderly residents from 40 Italian nursing homes were photographed in late 2022 by students of the Accademia di Brera. The Arengario facades will display 700 square meters of portraits, while the RSA walls will feature over 100 large portraits starting February 3. The initiative aims to give voice to the elderly after pandemic isolation and is promoted by the Comune di Milano with Arts_for, Museo del Novecento, Ufficio Arte negli Spazi Pubblici, Municipio 4, and supported by Fondazione Amplifon, which runs the "Ciao!" project supporting elderly quality of life since 2020.
