Józef Robakowski retrospective reveals Polish avant-garde film pioneer's experimental legacy
A retrospective exhibition spanning 35 works across half a century showcases Józef Robakowski's confrontational approach to film. The Polish avant-garde filmmaker faced significant political repression, including removal from his professorship in Łodź and restrictions on travel and exhibition within Poland. His 1978–99 work From My Window documents 21 years of daily life observed from his apartment window. Early pieces like 6,000,000 (1962) incorporate Holocaust footage, while autobiographical works such as About My Fingers (1982) display his whimsical side. Robakowski employed diverse techniques including cameraless filmmaking in Test 1 (1971), which involved perforating celluloid to create light patterns synchronized with sound. His 1990 work My Videomasachisms II parodies Marina Abramović's performance art, and The Energy Manifesto! (2003) critiques Bill Viola's video installations. Concert for Head (2009) features the artist banging his head against a Casio synthesizer. I Am Going... (1973) shows Robakowski climbing a snowbound parachute tower, evoking themes of solitude and determination. The exhibition reveals how Eastern European artists like Robakowski often pioneered techniques later adopted by Western contemporaries such as Douglas Gordon and Darren Almond. His work demonstrates constant experimentation with animation, documentary, accident, and performance rather than conventional approaches. The retrospective originally appeared in ArtReview's December 2012 issue.
