Joshua Rashaad McFadden's Photography Documents 2020's Racial Justice Protests

Photographer Joshua Rashaad McFadden traveled across the United States during 2020 to document protests against police brutality following the killing of George Floyd. His work captures the experiences of Black Americans confronting systemic racism and violence. McFadden journeyed from Rochester, New York, to Minneapolis, Minnesota, after Floyd's death on May 25, 2020. He then drove to Atlanta, Georgia, arriving as news broke of Rayshard Brooks's killing by police. The artist also followed Breonna Taylor's case in Louisville, Kentucky, and documented the murder of Daniel Prude in his hometown. His photographs show communities, families of the deceased, and protesters facing tear gas, rubber bullets, and curfews during a summer that resembled war zones. The global pandemic stripped away distractions, forcing many to witness undeniable acts of racism. McFadden's solo exhibition 'I Believe I’ll Run On' opens at the George Eastman Museum in Rochester on July 9, 2021. His portfolio gives visual form to the phrase 'I Can't Breathe,' echoing the final words of Eric Garner and countless others killed by police. The work emerged during a year of worldwide acknowledgment for the Black Lives Matter movement.
