Joshua Cesa's Land Art Installation 'Segni' on Italy-Slovenia Border
Artist Joshua Cesa (born 1986 in Monfalcone, GO) will create a land art intervention titled 'Segni' in the Karst plateau near Gorizia, a historic site of World War I battles. The work consists of two monumental red fabric sails, over 4 meters high and measuring 30 and 36 meters long respectively, installed in the Doberdò Lakes nature reserve. The installation will be ephemeral, lasting 30 days from October 20 to November 18, 2018. Cesa's work addresses the shifting borders that have divided populations along Italy's eastern frontier, forcing survivors to assume imposed national identities. The red color references the sumac shrub whose autumn leaves are said to represent the blood of ancient fallen soldiers. Visitors can experience the work from multiple perspectives: up close to perceive its kinetic nature, from inside, and from a promontory offering an aerial view. The installation is located 92 meters above sea level on the road connecting Monfalcone and Ronchi dei Legionari to Gorizia.
