Josh Reames and José Lerma Present Collaborative Paintings at Luis De Jesus Gallery
From January 30 to March 5, 2016, Josh Reames and José Lerma showcased their inaugural joint exhibition at the Luis De Jesus gallery in Los Angeles. Their collaboration fused Lerma's dynamic linear approach with Reames's geometric designs. Among the highlights are two expansive paintings titled 'He Hath Founded It Upon the Seas I and II,' which illustrate tumultuous scenes featuring pirates and colonial characters, drawing inspiration from the Cayman Islands and integrating elements from the islands' crest. The artwork cleverly merges political commentary with humor, portraying caricatures of notable Los Angeles art personalities. An installation in the back room addresses gentrification, while the project room highlights individual pieces, such as Lerma's 'Doubting Thomas.' The two artists first connected at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where Lerma served as Reames's mentor.
