Joseph Lindon Smith's Persepolis Paintings at Chicago's Oriental Institute
The University of Chicago's Oriental Institute is showcasing 'Joseph Lindon Smith: The Persepolis Paintings. A Special Exhibition' until August 28, 2022. Curated by Kiersten Neumann, this exhibition highlights six sizable oil-on-canvas pieces commissioned in 1935 from Joseph Lindon Smith (1863–1950) to capture the essence of Persepolis, established by Darius the Great around 518 BCE and destroyed by Alexander the Great in 330 BCE. For the first time since 1939, these paintings are exhibited together, with two large canvases recently revealed after more than eighty years. The collection features both landscapes and detailed views, with the largest canvas measuring 3.65 by 2.14 meters, alongside contemporary photographs and documents. The venue is located at 1155 E 58th Avenue, Chicago.
