Joseph Beuys Exhibition at Pace Gallery Revives Performance Documentation and Social Sculpture Legacy

Pace Gallery presented "Joseph Beuys: Make the Secrets Productive" from March 5 to April 10, 2010 at 534 West 25th Street in New York City. This marked the artist's first major New York exhibition since the Guggenheim's 1979 retrospective. Twelve sculptures spanning 1950s to mid-1980s were displayed alongside extensive documentation of Beuys' Aktionen performances. Photographer Ute Klophaus contributed over ninety black-and-white images capturing these legendary events. Four complete Aktionen films screened in a dedicated room with rare footage and interviews. The exhibition highlighted Beuys' 1977 mixed-media work "Jeder Mensch ist ein Künstler (Make the Secrets Productive)" expressing his belief in universal artistic potential. His 1982 Documenta VII project "7000 Oaks" was detailed as both ecological statement and social sculpture involving community participation. The 1958/1985 sculpture "Tisch mit Aggregat" featured a battery connected to bronze balls, metaphorizing energy storage and revolutionary potential. Beuys staged seventy happenings between 1962 and his 1986 death after encountering Fluxus. Contemporary artists like Urs Fischer and Thomas Hirschhorn acknowledge his influence. The gallery exhibition provided introductory access to Beuys' shamanistic persona and teaching legacy.
