Josep Grau-Garriga and Bouchra Khalili exhibitions at MACBA Barcelona

The MACBA in Barcelona presents two concurrent exhibitions: a survey of Josep Grau-Garriga and a mid-career retrospective of Bouchra Khalili. Grau-Garriga (1929–2011), a leading figure of the Catalan Tapestry School, is celebrated for his large-scale site-specific textile 'environments' that broke with traditional tapestry. Inspired by Art Informel and artists like Jean Dubuffet, his works use fibers, threads, and materials to create immersive spaces that dialogue with light and architecture. The exhibition 'Dialogue with Light' runs until September 11, 2023. Khalili's 'Between Circles and Constellations' (until May 21, 2023) gathers her last decade of films, videos, installations, and photographs. Curated by Elvira Dyangani Ose and Hiuwai Chu, the show explores suppressed histories, oral traditions, and the role of the artist as witness. The title references Al-Halqa, a Moroccan public storytelling tradition, and invites viewers to become witnesses to overlapping narratives from postcolonial archives. Both exhibitions are held at the Meier building of MACBA.
