José Olympio Pereira Advocates for Dialogue Over Polarization in 34th São Paulo Bienal

institutional · 2026-04-23

In 2020, the 34th edition of the Bienal de São Paulo will focus on dialogue and coexistence, as stated by José Olympio da Veiga Pereira, the president of the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo. Amid Brazil's political unrest, he rejects any partisan positions. Curators Jacopo Crivelli Visconti, Paulo Miyada, Ruth Estévez, Carla Zaccagnini, and Francesco Stocchi will lead the event, which will feature exhibitions and performances throughout the city, extending beyond the Ibirapuera Pavilion. Pereira, a board member for ten years, aims to enhance the international advisory council formed in 2016. He supports Minister Osmar Terra and Secretary Henrique Pires during these challenging times. The Bienal is set to elevate São Paulo as a visual arts hub from September to December 2020.
