Jørgen Haugen Sørensen Retrospective in Pietrasanta
A monumental bronze sculpture, The Crowd, by Danish artist Jørgen Haugen Sørensen (born 1934) has been installed in Piazza Duomo, Pietrasanta, as part of a retrospective curated by Bruno Corà (director of Fondazione Burri) and Lars Kærulf Møller (director of Bornholm Museum of Art), with Nina Wöhlk and Eli Benveniste. Donated by the New Carlsberg Foundation, the work depicts a huddled mass of figures seeking mutual protection, reflecting the artist's ongoing theme of the human condition. Another bronze, The Shadow, also in the piazza, was supported by the Danish Arts Foundation. The exhibition, titled La folla, spans multiple venues: at Galleria Paola Raffo Arte Contemporanea, polychrome animal sculptures from the 1990s are shown; in the Sala Capitolo of Sant'Agostino, the monochrome series A Dark Story in White features dense, anguished human groupings that gradually dissolve into faint traces. In the former church of Sant'Agostino, the installation Witnesses and the others presents deformed clay faces in a long row, accompanied by five sculptures on iron structures. Monumental works in the gardens evoke architectural volumes, while in the cloister drawings are displayed. The installation Portrait of an old agreement (1970s) in the Sala Putti reassembles bronze and other fragments on the floor, referencing Sørensen's early years in Pietrasanta after moving there in 1968 to work with local materials. The exhibition runs through summer 2017.
