Jorge Queiroz's 2013 Exhibition at Sikkema Jenkins Explores Abstraction and Figuration

From January 31 to March 2, 2013, Sikkema Jenkins & Co. in New York City hosted a solo exhibition by Portuguese artist Jorge Queiroz. The display showcased a fusion of abstraction and realism, characterized by organic shapes that dominated the artworks. Among the highlighted pieces were Waiting on the Sand (2012), which illustrates a figure in red on sand overshadowed by boulder-like shapes, and H Is for Heads (2012), featuring head-like forms with a dark-brown center. Another notable work, The Alphabet (2011), presents a tan form set against an orange backdrop. Queiroz’s approach combines varied formats and rough edges, revealing intricate details and unresolved enigmas, marking him as an innovator in painting.
