Jorge Hue, 90-Year-Old Brazilian Architect, Reflects on Life, Imprisonment, and Modernist Legacy
On August 6, 2013, his 90th birthday, architect Jorge Hue shared reflections on his life and career in Rio de Janeiro. He discussed his unpublished essays, including works on beards and the wheel, and his admiration for Mies van der Rohe. Hue revealed his 1972 imprisonment and torture by Brazil's military regime after his son Jorge Eduardo Hue was targeted. He described being held at a barracks on Rua Barão de Mesquita, subjected to interrogations, and witnessing a young woman detained. The interview was witnessed by political scientist Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, founder of the Núcleo de Estudos da Violência at USP. Hue lives in a Parque Guinle building designed by Lucio Costa, constructed from 1943 to 1948, which originally planned seven structures but only built three. He mentioned working on the Palácio do Planalto during Costa e Silva's government and seeing cheap replicas of Mies van der Rohe furniture there. Hue also recounted a 1958 MG convertible he owned from 1975 to 1985, purchased after calculating 11 perfect days annually in Rio. He has seven children, 16 grandchildren, and nearly 12 great-grandchildren.
