Jordan Wolfson's 'Body Sculpture' animatronic work debuts at National Gallery of Australia

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Jordan Wolfson's animatronic installation 'Body Sculpture' is currently displayed at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra until April 28. This work builds on concepts from his earlier pieces, '(Female figure)' (2014) and 'Colored sculpture' (2016), but is predominantly mute and devoid of facial features. Created over five years, partly due to delays from the pandemic, it follows his 2020 piece 'ARTISTS FRIENDS RACISTS.' Wolfson collaborates with roboticist Mark Setrakian and others on choreography, adhering to a 90/10 editing principle. The sculpture showcases a metallic robot executing a 30-minute performance. While he draws inspiration from artists like Maria Lassnig and thinkers such as Krishnamurti, Wolfson primarily creates for himself, appreciating the audience's engagement.
