Jonathan Green's Gullah Geechee Vision at Cameron Art Museum

The Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, North Carolina, is presenting 'Rooted in Memory: The Gullah Geechee Vision of Jonathan Green,' an exhibition that pairs the artist's vibrant paintings with traditional Gullah Geechee crafts. Green, a native of Gardens Corner, South Carolina, draws on his heritage to depict scenes of work, love, belonging, and spirituality. The show includes sweetgrass baskets, quilts, and Adinkra printed cloth, highlighting the cultural traditions of the Gullah Geechee people. Notable works include 'Time to Rejoice' (2005), 'Private Words' (2005), and 'Cherished Time' (2007), all oil on canvas, on loan from an anonymous collector. Also featured are 'Gullah Dolls' (1990) by Janie Hunter, from the Charleston Museum; 'Missionary Basket' (1986) by Sister Elizabeth Coakley, from the South Carolina State Museum; and 'Cobra Basket with Handle' (1980) by Mary Jackson, on loan from the Gibbes Museum of Art. The exhibition runs through January 24, 2027.
