Jonathan Fine outlines inclusive vision for Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna

institutional · 2026-04-26

At the Theater Museum, Jonathan Fine, the newly appointed director of the Kunsthistorisches Museum (KHM) in Vienna, unveiled his initiative titled “ReMastering KHM: open, accessible, excellent.” Fine, an American art historian and the former head of the Welt Museum, intends to bolster the KHM-Museumsverband network. He aims to facilitate ongoing discussions between classical masterpieces and modern art, with the Theseustempel set to showcase contemporary works annually, beginning with Shannon Alonzo in May. Additionally, the Welt Museum will host exhibitions such as “Who’s Wearing the Pants?” Fine envisions museums as “connecting spaces” and seeks to foster collaboration among KHM-Museumsverband institutions, display collections in different regions, create junior curator roles, and offer scholarships for up-and-coming curators.
