Jonas Mekas retrospective at Mattatoio, Rome
A major retrospective of Lithuanian filmmaker Jonas Mekas (1922–2019) opens at Mattatoio in Rome, curated by Francesco Urbano Ragazzi. Titled 'Images Are Real,' the exhibition spans Mekas's sixty-year career, from the 1960s to the early 2000s. It features video installations, monitors, photographic series, and vintage magazines. The show opens with footage of the Twin Towers collapse on 9/11, contrasting with the two-screen installation of his diary film 'Walden,' which captures everyday joys. Works also document his friendships with Andy Warhol, Allen Ginsberg, and Yoko Ono. Notably, in 2007, at age 80, Mekas launched the '365 Day Project' on YouTube, transferring his diary practice online. The exhibition runs from November 10, 2022, to February 26, 2023.
