Jon McCormack captures disorienting rock formation on Kangaroo Island with iPhone 17 Pro

Australian photographer Jon McCormack created a striking image by climbing inside a hollowed-out granite boulder on Kangaroo Island's southern edge. Shot at sunset with an iPhone 17 Pro, the photograph shows a suspended stone formation overlooking the Southern Ocean toward Antarctica. McCormack describes the location as both ancient and exposed, shaped by weather and isolation over millennia. The composition features graphic simplicity with lines, horizon, and openings creating visual tension. Kangaroo Island separated from mainland Australia approximately 10,000 years ago, allowing unique species like the soot-coloured dunnart to evolve independently. With just 14 kangaroos per human resident, the island maintains exceptional biodiversity. McCormack, originally from Western Queensland and now based in northern California, has spent ten years photographing natural patterns across seven continents. His book 'Patterns: Art of the Natural World' was published by Damiani this month. The photographer aims to make viewers perceive nature as wondrous, intricate art through images that are visually striking yet slightly disorienting. Remarkable Rocks, where the photo was taken, consists of granite formations carved by wind, rain, and salt over time.
