Johnny Depp's Modigliani Film Premieres at Rome Film Fest

other · 2026-04-26

Johnny Depp presented his second directorial effort, 'Modì – Three Days on the Wing of Madness', at the 19th Rome Film Festival but skipped the press conference. The film stars Riccardo Scamarcio as Amedeo Modigliani, alongside Antonia Desplat, Bruno Gouery, Luisa Ranieri, and Al Pacino. Set in 1916 Paris, it follows 72 hours in the life of the Italian painter as he flees police and considers leaving the city, with friends Utrillo, Soutine, and muse Beatrice Hastings trying to persuade him to stay. The narrative includes a meeting with American collector Maurice Gangnat (played by Pacino), which takes an unexpected turn. Scamarcio described the experience as incredible, noting that Depp shared stories about his life and friendship with Marlon Brando. He called this Modigliani an alter ego of Depp, embodying anarchic and naive dynamics. Scamarcio also expressed disbelief at acting alongside Pacino, stating the film explores the relationship between art financiers and artists. The movie pays homage to silent cinema and German Expressionism while reflecting on art, money, and compromise. Depp did not take a role for himself but chose to portray an artist in whom he sees aspects of himself. The film will be released in Italian cinemas between late November and early December by Be Water Film.
