John Walker's Recent Paintings at Alexandre Gallery Explore Maine's Coastal Landscape
From October 2 to November 15, 2014, Alexandre Gallery hosted an exhibition featuring John Walker's latest paintings, inspired by the vistas from his studio in Seal Point, Maine. For more than ten years, Walker has delved into this coastal scenery, even integrating actual mud into his paint. Over his fifty-year career, he has broadened the scope of Abstract Expressionism through the use of shaped canvases and collage methods. His recent pieces showcase a brighter color scheme and clear compositions, displayed on large canvases measuring six or seven feet, as well as smaller works on repurposed bingo cards. Notable large pieces like "The Sea No. II" (2014) reveal dynamic contrasts, while the smaller works burst with color, embodying the elemental interaction of land and sky. Walker's technique combines observation with abstraction, drawing from European modernism and the New York School tradition.
