award · 2026-05-04

The 57th World Press Photo awards were announced on February 14, 2014, in Amsterdam, with American photographer John Stanmeyer winning the prestigious 'Photo of the Year' for his image 'Signal,' commissioned by National Geographic. The photograph depicts African migrants on a beach in Djibouti, holding mobile phones aloft to catch a signal from Somalia, highlighting themes of technology, migration, and desperation. The jury noted the image's invitation to discuss globalization and humanity. A total of 53 prizes were awarded across categories including sports, portraits, landscapes, and current events. Three Italian photographers were recognized: Bruno D'Amicis won first prize in the Nature singles category for 'La volpe zerda, una specie in pericolo,' showing a captive fennec fox in Tunisia; Gianluca Panella earned third prize in General News stories for 'Gaza blackout'; and Alessandro Penso took first prize in General News singles for 'Sistemazione temporanea,' depicting a Syrian refugee camp in a former school in Sofia, Bulgaria. The winning works will be exhibited at the Museo di Roma in Trastevere starting April 30, accompanied by a book published by Contrasto.
